ELD & Local and State Assessment
Welcome to the ELD & Local and State Assessment Department
The English Language Development (ELD) program at CCHS is structured to support a successful transition for students acquiring English as a second language. The program employs a comprehensive four-pronged approach that emphasizes the development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
Instruction is guided by the California Department of Education’s content standards, in alignment with the California ELD Standards. The curriculum is intentionally designed to accelerate English language acquisition, enabling students to integrate into mainstream academic courses at the earliest opportunity. Student progress in English language proficiency is assessed through the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC).
To foster collaboration and engagement with families, ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) meetings are held in September, February, and May for parents of English Learners.
Our office is also responsible for coordinating a range of assessments, including the CAASPP Smarter Balanced assessments in English Language Arts/Literacy, Mathematics, and Science, as well as the California Alternate Assessments for these subjects. Additionally, we oversee the administration of placement examinations for incoming 8th grade students.
